Overdrive was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, though it didn't have a numbered release in that series. The game was developed by a small team and published by a minor label, typical of many shareware racers from that era. It fit right in with the early 90s PC gaming scene, where fast action and simple controls were the main appeal.
You control a small, agile car from a top-down perspective, racing against several opponents on twisting, narrow tracks. The main objective is straightforward: finish first. The signature mechanics include managing your car's limited fuel supply, which requires careful pacing and occasional pit stops, and navigating tracks filled with sharp turns and aggressive rival drivers who will actively try to force you off the road. The game moves at a relentless pace, and the difficulty is unforgiving; one mistake can cost you the race. It feels like a constant, tense battle for control where every second matters.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
