Game Overview
Phalanx on SNES is one of those shooters that sticks with you—mostly because of that bizarre box art with the old man playing a banjo (seriously, what was that about?). You pilot this prototype starfighter called the Phalanx, blasting through waves of alien invaders who’ve taken over a human colony planet. The first level throws you into a canyon, dodging turrets and weird organic-looking ships, and it only gets weirder from there.
What I like is how the weapons feel—each upgrade actually changes how you play. Grab the spread shot, and suddenly you’re mowing down enemies like it’s nothing, but then the game throws these tight corridors at you where a laser might’ve been better. By the time you’re storming the alien mothership in later levels, you’re weaving through bullet hell with this satisfying arsenal. Just don’t get too attached to your power-ups—one hit, and you’re back to peashooter mode.
It’s tough, but not unfair, and the soundtrack nails that early ‘90s synth vibe. If you’re into shmups with personality, this one’s worth a shot.
