Game Overview

Ping Pals came out for the Nintendo DS in 2004, developed by WayForward Technologies. It was one of those early titles that tried to show off the handheld's chat and drawing features, back when the idea of portable online communication still felt pretty new. The game let you connect with friends locally or over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which was a big deal at the time, even if the execution was a little rough around the edges.

You control an on screen avatar and spend most of your time sending pre written messages, drawing pictures with the stylus, or playing simple minigames like tic tac toe and rock paper scissors. The main goal is just to hang out and be silly with other people. The touch screen is used for all the drawing and menu navigation, while the microphone can be used for voice messages, a feature that often led to a lot of garbled, noisy clips. The pacing is entirely dependent on who you're talking to; it can be slow if no one is online, or completely frantic if a bunch of people start drawing and talking at once. It feels like a digital playground where the real fun comes from the other players, not the game itself.
