Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End for the Nintendo DS came out in 2007, developed by Amaze Entertainment. It was one of those licensed tie-ins that tried to capture the movie's energy on a handheld, back when the DS was full of experiments with touch controls and dual screen setups. The game doesn't try to retell the whole film; it carves out its own side story that slots into the world.

You mostly control Jack Sparrow, navigating through screen by screen environments, fighting East India Company soldiers with stylus driven sword combos. You swipe and tap to parry and attack, which keeps the action immediate, if a little imprecise at times. Between skirmishes you take the helm of the Black Pearl, engaging in real time naval battles where you aim cannons, maneuver to avoid broadsides, and eventually board enemy ships for close quarters combat. The pacing is uneven, with some frustrating difficulty spikes, but moving between swordplay and ship command gives the adventure a tangible sense of variety. It feels like a pocket sized pirate romp that makes clever, if sometimes awkward, use of the hardware.
