Game Overview

Pocket Monsters Snap, known as Pokémon Snap outside Japan, came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. Nintendo and HAL Laboratory developed it, and it was one of the few N64 games that focused on photography instead of action or adventure. At the time, it stood out for its relaxed pace and its use of Pokémon in a setting that felt more like a nature preserve than a battle arena.

You control Todd, a photographer riding on a rail-guided buggy called the Zero-One. Your goal is to take high-scoring photos of wild Pokémon in their natural environments. You can toss apples to lure Pokémon into view, hit them with Pester Balls to provoke unique reactions, and even play a melody to attract certain species. The game moves at a steady, almost meditative pace, with no time pressure in most courses. It feels like a quiet, observational break from the usual Pokémon formula, rewarding patience and a good eye more than quick reflexes.
