Game Overview
Pokémon Colosseum is one of those weird, moody spin-offs that somehow works. Instead of the usual gym battles and friendly rivalries, you're a former villain stealing Shadow Pokémon back from bad guys—which sounds edgy, but hey, it gives the battles actual stakes. The desert towns and dimly lit arenas make it feel more like a noir western than your typical Pokémon game.
Battles are double battles only, which changes up the strategy big time. And purifying Shadow Pokémon? Way more involved than just leveling them up—you actually have to use them in fights to chip away at their darkness. The animations are surprisingly slick for a GameCube game, too. That Houndoom’s snarl still gives me chills.
It’s janky in places (good luck figuring out some of the purification requirements without a guide), but there’s nothing else quite like it in the series. You either vibe with its weirdness or bounce right off.
