Pokemon Colosseum came out on the GameCube in 2003, developed by Genius Sonority and published by Nintendo. It was a different kind of Pokemon game for its time, trading the usual bright routes and friendly gyms for a rougher, more isolated setting that stood out on the console.

You control a former thief named Wes, traveling through the desert region of Orre with your partner Espeon and Umbreon. Your main goal is to capture Shadow Pokemon, which are corrupted versions of regular Pokemon, by snatching them from other trainers during double battles. You explore towns and rugged overworld areas screen by screen, engaging in turn based battles where your primary objective shifts from simply winning to strategically stealing your opponent's Shadow Pokemon. The pacing is deliberate, with a heavier focus on story and a higher difficulty curve than many other games in the series. It feels like a tense, personal mission where every captured creature is a small victory.
