Pokemon Conquest came out on the Nintendo DS in 2012, published by Nintendo. It was a different kind of Pokemon game for the system, blending the monster collecting I knew with the tactical grid based combat of a strategy RPG. It felt like a natural experiment for the DS, a platform that welcomed all sorts of creative genre mixes.
You control a young warlord aiming to unite the region of Ransei by conquering its kingdoms. Each turn based battle happens on a grid map where you command a small team of warriors, each linked to a single Pokemon. You move your units, use their specific Pokemon moves, and try to outmaneuver the enemy. The main goal is to capture all the castles, and key mechanics include forming perfect warrior Pokemon pairs for better synergy and managing your kingdom's development between battles. The pacing is deliberate, with the difficulty coming from smart enemy placement and type matchups. It feels like solving a puzzle with fireballs and lightning bolts.
