Pokemon DarkViolet is one of those fan-made GBA roms that feels familiar but different enough to be interesting. You start in a small town, the usual setup, but the trainer battles hit harder than you'd expect early on. The wild encounters seem tweaked too - I ran into a level 8 Pidgeotto before I even had two badges.
The map layout throws some curveballs if you're used to the official games. There's this one forest area where the paths twist back on themselves in ways that had me checking the menu map constantly. Not bad, just takes some getting used to.
What stands out is how some of the weaker Pokemon get small stat boosts or movepool changes. My Butterfree actually stayed useful into the mid-game, which never happens. Pokemon DarkViolet clearly had someone thinking about balance, not just copying the original formula.
