Pokemon Derpizard came out in 2013 for the Game Boy Advance, a time when the handheld was well past its prime but still had a dedicated fanbase. It was developed by a small, independent team whose name I can't quite recall, but they clearly had a love for the classic Pokemon formula. The game doesn't try to reinvent the wheel; it just offers a new region to explore with a fresh set of creatures, many of which have a charmingly goofy design.

You control a young trainer tasked with filling your Pokedex by catching and training these peculiar Pokemon. The main goal is to defeat the eight gym leaders and eventually challenge the Elite Four, all while thwarting the plans of a mischievous team that keeps causing trouble. Exploration is screen by screen, with tall grass hiding both common finds and rare encounters. Battles use a turn based system where type advantages matter, but the difficulty feels balanced, never too punishing for casual play. It feels like revisiting an old friend with a new sense of humor.
