Pokemon Thunder Yellow is a Game Boy Color ROM hack that reworks the original Yellow version with new Pokemon, tougher trainers, and a few surprises. It was released unofficially by fans, not by Nintendo or Game Freak, but it captures the feel of that era when players were hungry for more challenging and unpredictable takes on familiar Kanto adventures.
You control a young trainer starting out in Pallet Town, aiming to collect eight gym badges and challenge the Elite Four. The game retains the core mechanics of turn based battles and Pokemon collection, but it introduces a much wider variety of wild and trainer Pokemon from later generations, along with increased difficulty in key battles. Exploration remains grid based and screen by screen, but you never know which Pokemon might appear in an old area, keeping you on your toes. It feels like revisiting a childhood home where all the furniture has been rearranged, and some of it might shock you if you touch it the wrong way.
