Game Overview

Polaris came out in 1983 for the Atari 2600, developed by Taito. It was one of those later releases for the system, a time when developers were still finding new ways to push the hardware, even as newer consoles began to emerge.

You control a nuclear submarine from a top-down perspective, moving it left and right along the bottom of the screen. Your main objective is to destroy enemy ships, helicopters, and submarines before they can drop depth charges or missiles on you. You fire torpedoes upward, which must be aimed carefully to hit fast-moving airborne targets, and you also have a limited supply of surface-to-air missiles for taking out helicopters. The pacing is relentless; each wave introduces more aggressive enemies, and the difficulty escalates quickly. It feels tense and demanding, a constant fight for survival against overwhelming odds.
