Powball came out in 1996 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a release from Pixel Painters that bundled a few simple, arcade-style titles. It was a time when shareware discs were common, and games like this offered a quick, uncomplicated dose of action without much fuss.
You control a small, rectangular paddle at the bottom of the screen, using it to hit a single, fast-moving ball that bounces around destructible blocks and various obstacles. The main goal is to clear each stage by breaking all the blocks without letting the ball slip past your paddle. Key mechanics include the ball accelerating after consecutive hits and certain blocks dropping power-ups that temporarily alter your paddle's size or the ball's behavior. The pacing is relentless; the ball moves quickly, and mistakes are costly, making for a tense, focused experience. It feels like a race against your own reflexes, a pure test of timing and concentration.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
