Power Spike is a Game Boy Color release from 0, a volleyball game that arrived during the handheld's peak years. It was developed by a studio whose name escapes me now, but it fit right in with the kind of quick, competitive sports titles people carried around in their pockets back then.
You control a volleyball player, moving left and right to position yourself under the ball, then tapping buttons to bump, set, or spike it over the net. The main goal is to outscore the opponent, either in single matches or a tournament bracket. The game uses screen by screen exploration for its tournament mode, moving you through different courts and opponents. Matches are fast, with the ball accelerating unpredictably, and the timing for a powerful spike is tight but satisfying. It feels like a genuine test of reflexes, especially when playing against a friend in two-player mode.
