Jaleco released Psychic 5 in 1987 for arcades, a time when side-scrolling action games were common but rarely this strange. You control one of five psychic children, each with a unique ability, tasked with rescuing a kidnapped girl from a haunted mansion. The game stands out with its odd setting and the freedom to choose your character at the start, something not every platformer offered back then.
You move through the mansion screen by screen, breaking down doors and fighting possessed objects like flying brooms and animated furniture. Each character handles differently; the strong one smashes barriers easily, while the fast one dodges enemies more effectively. The main goal is to find hidden jars that reveal items or power-ups, all while avoiding traps and defeating bosses, including a large demonic figure near the end. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can feel unforgiving with limited continues. It feels unpredictable and slightly unhinged, like exploring a house where every room might throw something new and bizarre at you.
