Game Overview

Qix on Game Boy came out in 1990, developed by Nintendo R&D1. It was one of those early puzzle games that felt perfectly suited to the handheld's small screen, a simple concept that could eat up time on a bus ride or between classes. There wasn't a lot of flash to it, just you and a stark, black playfield, which was pretty standard for the era.

You control a small marker that moves along the edges of the screen. Your goal is to claim territory by drawing lines called Stix from the border inward, boxing off sections of the playfield. The main threat comes from the Qix itself, a neon squiggle that floats unpredictably in the unclaimed area; if it touches a line you are actively drawing, you lose a life. Faster, smaller Sparks also patrol the edges, forcing you to time your movements carefully. The pacing is tense and methodical, a constant balance between aggressive expansion and patient evasion. It feels like a high-stakes game of territorial chicken played out in slow motion.
