Game Overview

R-Type II came out in 1989, developed by Irem, and playing it through MAME today feels like stepping right back into that era of arcade cabinets. It's a direct sequel that doesn't reinvent the formula, just pushes everything further; more enemies, more complex stages, and more of the meticulous, deliberate shooting the series was known for.

You pilot the R-9C spacecraft through horizontally scrolling levels, destroying alien forces and dodging intricate bullet patterns. Your main goal is survival, clearing each stage to face a massive boss at the end. The core mechanics are the returning Force pod, which you can detach as a stationary shield or send ahead as an attack, and the chargeable Wave Cannon. The pacing is slow and strategic, demanding careful positioning and planning rather than reflexes alone. Every mistake is punishing, often costing you your precious power-ups and leaving you desperately vulnerable. It feels like a tense, calculated war of attrition against a beautifully cruel universe.
