R-Type III: The Third Lightning came out on the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Irem. It was part of a wave of shooters that pushed the SNES hardware, using Mode 7 effects to create stages that twisted and rotated around you. The game built on the series' reputation without straying too far from what made it work.
You pilot the R-9 Arrowhead, a spacecraft fighting an alien force called the Bydo. Your goal is to survive each side-scrolling stage, destroy the boss, and move forward. The key mechanics are your Force pod, which can be detached and positioned for offense or defense, and the new Force devices that change your shot type, like the diffused Round Laser or the piercing Cyclone. The game is methodical; you memorize enemy patterns and stage layouts because rushing in means instant death. It feels tense and deliberate, demanding your full attention until the credits roll.
