Rastan hit the Sega Master System in 1987, a port of Taito's arcade game that brought its brand of sword and sorcery home. It arrived during a time when side-scrolling action games were common, but few offered this kind of gritty, persistent combat. You control Rastan, a barbarian on a quest to slay a dragon and claim an ancient kingdom's treasure.
You move screen by screen through hazardous terrain, using your sword to cut down skeletons, lizardmen, and other monsters. The main goal is straightforward: survive six stages, defeat each area boss, and reach the end. Key mechanics include picking up secondary weapons like axes or maces, which offer more power but slower swings, and carefully timing jumps across bottomless pits or over instant-death spikes. The pacing is aggressive, with enemies swarming constantly, and the difficulty is punishing; mistakes cost lives quickly. It feels raw and demanding, like every victory was earned through repetition and stubbornness.
