Game Overview

Resident Evil Gaiden came out in 2001 for the Game Boy Color, developed by M4 and published by Capcom. It was a strange release for its time, a survival horror experiment on a handheld that wasn't really built for that kind of atmosphere. You're on a cruise ship overrun with the undead, and the whole thing feels like a condensed, grainy version of the bigger console games.

You control Barry Burton and later Leon Kennedy, moving screen by screen through the ship's claustrophobic layout. The main goal is to uncover the source of the outbreak and survive the onslaught. Combat uses a unique timing-based system where you aim a moving cursor across a bar to land critical hits; miss, and you're left vulnerable. You manage limited ammo, solve simple item-based puzzles, and backtrack to unlock new areas. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly due to awkward controls and some unforgiving enemy placements. It feels tense and rough, but there's a real sense of accomplishment when you finally clear a crowded hallway.
