Rex Ronan is one of those weird, educational SNES games that somehow makes lung surgery feel like an action movie. You play as a microscopic surgeon diving into the body of Jake Westboro—a guy who literally worked for a tobacco company but is now dying from smoking. The irony isn’t subtle, but hey, it’s the ‘90s.
Inside his body, you’re blasting away tar monsters and dodging nicotine blobs while robots (sent by the tobacco company, because of course) try to stop you. Mess up, and Jake flatlines on the operating table. It’s bizarrely intense for a game that’s basically an anti-smoking PSA, but the mix of gross-out body horror and shooter mechanics actually works. The first time you see a tumor explode into giblets, you’ll either laugh or feel vaguely guilty for ever holding a cigarette.
Weirdest part? It’s weirdly fun for something so heavy-handed. Just don’t expect subtlety when the final boss is literally the Grim Reaper smoking a cigar.
