Ocean Software released RoboCop 2 for the Game Boy in 1991, a time when licensed games often felt rushed or simplistic. This one tried to do more, mixing straightforward action with some unexpected twists that set it apart from other movie tie-ins on the handheld.
You control RoboCop through side-scrolling levels, shooting criminals and avoiding hazards like bombs and enemy fire. The main goal is to progress screen by screen, clearing out enemies and occasionally solving simple puzzles, such as moving crates or navigating maze-like sections. Between action stages, you sometimes pilot a jetpack in forced-scrolling shooter segments, which change up the pace but can feel awkward. The difficulty is uneven, with some cheap enemy placements and abrupt challenges. Playing it feels like a rough but earnest attempt to capture the movie's tone through limited hardware.
