Signature mechanics include screen by screen exploration with some light secrets, the Rush adaptors that grant new mobility options like a jet or coil jump, and the introduction of Bass as a rival who ambushes you. The pacing is deliberate, with longer, more complex levels than earlier games, and the difficulty remains substantial, especially in the later fortress areas.
