Samurai Shodown IV keeps the series' brutal swordplay intact but shakes things up just enough to feel fresh. Right off the bat, you notice the new faces—Sogetsu and Kazuki, these two brothers who fight like polar opposites—alongside returning favorites like Jubei, who still swings that massive sword like it weighs nothing.
The big twist? Every character now has two versions: SLASH (balanced) and BUST (high-risk, high-reward). I went with BUST Charlotte first, and man, her attacks hit harder but leave you wide open if you whiff. The new "No Contest" finishers are straight-up vicious—think Mortal Kombat fatalities but with way more dramatic slashes and geysers of pixel blood. Dodging feels smoother than in III, though you’ll still eat a blade if you mistime it.
It’s still classic SamSho at heart—tense, deliberate, and punishing—but with just enough chaos to keep you on your toes. That one stage where cherry blossoms fall while you fight? Perfect for a dramatic showdown.
