Play Sanada Juu Yuushi (Japan) Online
Pick a warrior—spear thrower, chain sickle weirdo, sword guy—and learn spacing fast or get wrecked by some random foot soldier. Tiny sprites, shamisen shredding, and actual tactics in an NES side-scroller.

Sanada Juu Yuushi came out on the NES in 1988 from Jaleco, a side-scrolling action game that felt a bit different from the usual platformers and brawlers of the time. It draws from the Sengoku period, letting you step into the role of one of the Sanada Ten Braves, and the presentation has that distinct, slightly gritty late-80s Famicom aesthetic.
You choose one of three characters, each with a unique weapon and attack range, and fight through screen-by-screen stages filled with enemy soldiers and occasional mini-bosses. The main goal is to defeat enemy commanders to advance the story, and the combat relies heavily on spacing and timing your strikes rather than button mashing. You collect scrolls to upgrade your health and attack power, and the difficulty is pretty unforgiving, demanding careful movement and pattern recognition. It feels deliberate and tactical, where every encounter requires your full attention.
