Secret of the Stars came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Tecmo. It was one of those mid-tier RPGs that didn't get a ton of attention, especially with heavy hitters like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger around. It had a certain charm, though, and if you were digging through the library looking for something a little off the beaten path, this was a title you might have rented or picked up used.

You control two distinct parties, the Aqutallions on the surface and the Luminous Underground, switching between them to advance their separate but connected stories. The main goal is to stop an ancient evil, which involves a lot of screen-by-screen exploration, turn-based combat, and dungeon crawling. A key mechanic is combining different elemental magics from your party members to create more powerful spells; figuring out which elements work best together is a big part of the strategy. The pacing can be slow, and the difficulty has some uneven spikes, but there's a real satisfaction in building up both groups and seeing how their efforts eventually intertwine. It feels like managing two small worlds that are slowly being woven into one.
