Game Overview

Secret of the Stars, released by Tecmo for the Super Nintendo in 1993, is one of those mid-tier RPGs that slipped under the radar for a lot of people. It came out during a crowded era for the console, surrounded by bigger names and flashier adventures, but it has its own quiet, peculiar charm.

You control two distinct parties: a young boy named Ares on a fantasy quest to save his village, and a team of futuristic soldiers called the Crusaders battling alien invaders. The main objective involves both groups eventually working toward a common goal, which you manage by switching between them on the world map. Signature mechanics include exploring towns and dungeons screen by screen, engaging in turn-based combat with a front-row/back-row formation system, and slowly building a home base for the Crusaders that new members join over time. The pacing is methodical, and even the "Easy Type" version, which reduces the need for level grinding, maintains a relaxed, deliberate rhythm. It feels like uncovering a strange, low-budget cartoon from another dimension, earnest and a little clumsy, but hard to entirely dismiss.
