Game Overview

Sgt. Rock on Game Boy Color came out in 2000, developed by Crawfish and published by Midway. It was part of that wave of World War II shooters that felt right at home on handhelds, offering straightforward action without much fuss. The game puts you in the boots of the comic book sergeant, leading a squad through enemy lines with a clear mission: push forward and survive.

You control Sgt. Rock himself, moving screen by screen to eliminate Axis soldiers, destroy vehicles, and complete objectives like blowing up bridges or rescuing allies. The game uses an overhead perspective, and you can switch between a few weapons, including a rifle and a shotgun, each with its own feel and range. Enemy fire comes from all directions, and the pacing is relentless; you have to keep moving, duck behind cover when you can, and manage your limited ammo. It feels tense and immediate, like every shot counts and every mistake costs you.
