Sgt. Rock: On the Frontline came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, developed by Crawfish Interactive and published by Midway. It was part of that wave of late-era GBC games that tried to squeeze a little more action out of the hardware before the Advance arrived. You play as the titular sergeant, a World War II infantryman, leading a small squad through a series of missions across different European theaters.

You control Sgt. Rock directly, moving screen by screen through side-scrolling levels filled with enemy soldiers, vehicles, and obstacles. Your main objective is to complete mission goals, which often involve destroying specific targets or simply surviving to the end of a stage. The game employs a few key mechanics: you can switch between a rifle, a machine gun, and grenades to handle different threats, command your two AI squadmates to follow or hold position, and even hijack enemy tanks and gun emplacements for heavy firepower. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is notably steep, with limited continues and enemies that respawn quickly. It feels like a tense, chaotic scramble from one firefight to the next, where every bit of cover matters.
