I picked up The Flintstones: King Rock Treasure Island for the Game Boy back in 1992, a Taito release that fit right in with the platform's library of cartoon adventures. It was a time when licensed games were everywhere, and this one tried to capture the show's charm with simple, side scrolling action.

You control Fred Flintstone, moving screen by screen across an island, chucking your trusty stone axe to stun the various dinosaurs and other critters that get in your way. The main goal is to collect all the pieces of a broken crown, which involves a lot of careful jumping and some light puzzle solving. A key mechanic is using your temporarily dazed enemies as stepping stones to reach higher ledges, and you can also call on Dino for a ride, which gives you a better jump and more precise aim for your throws. The pacing is methodical, with enemies that respawn quickly if you leave a screen, making some sections feel a bit repetitive. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes clunky quest where every successful jump and well aimed throw is a small victory.
