Shadow Blasters came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, developed by Sage's Creation. It was one of those early action platformers that tried to stand out with a unique weapon system, arriving at a time when the console was still building its library. You don't hear much about it now, but it had its own ideas.

You control a lone warrior fighting through a demon invasion across several themed worlds. The main goal is to survive each stage, defeat the boss, and move on. The key mechanic is picking your fighter at the start; you choose between a quick rapier, a slow staff, or a balanced ninja, and you can swap between them mid-level when different enemies show up. You have a charge shot for each weapon and a limited screen clearing special attack you need to save for tough spots. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is pretty unforgiving, with enemies coming from all directions. It feels like a constant scramble to stay alive and manage your options under pressure.
