Sonic 2 – Project Shadow is a fan-made hack for the Sega Genesis, released unofficially with no official developer or publisher attached. It takes the familiar framework of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and reworks it to feature Shadow as the protagonist, placing it among the many creative mods that extended the life of the Genesis library long after its commercial peak.

You control Shadow, who retains his signature hover ability from later games, allowing for extended air time and smoother landings across revamped versions of Chemical Plant and other classic stages. The main objective remains collecting Chaos Emeralds and defeating Robotnik, but the level layouts are altered, often with more verticality and hidden paths that reward exploration. The pacing is brisk, and some sections introduce a noticeably higher difficulty, with tighter platforming and more aggressive enemy placement. It feels like revisiting a childhood game through a slightly distorted, more challenging lens.
