I picked up Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children: Shiro no Sho on Game Boy Color back in 2002, a time when the handheld was still getting some surprisingly deep RPGs. It was developed by Atlus, who were already known for their more mature, complex takes on the genre compared to a lot of the brighter, more straightforward adventures out there. This one felt like a part of that late-lifecycle push for the system, offering a denser experience for players who had maybe already exhausted the more famous titles.

You control a young boy thrown into a world where humans and demons coexist, and your main goal is to prevent a catastrophic war between the two. The core of the game is exploring the world screen by screen, talking to everyone, and navigating maze-like dungeons. Its signature mechanics are demon negotiation, where you must offer items or answer questions correctly to recruit monsters to your side, and demon fusion, which lets you combine your collected allies to create more powerful partners. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty doesn't pull any punches, expecting you to learn its systems through trial and error. It feels like solving a tough, rewarding puzzle with every new area and encounter.
