Shining Force came out on the Sega Genesis in 1992, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the more ambitious strategy games on the system, arriving at a time when console RPGs were starting to explore more complex, tactical ideas beyond simple menu-based combat.

You control a group of characters, moving them one by one across grid-based battlefields to fight monsters in turn-based combat. The main goal is to build your army and defeat the evil forces threatening the kingdom. Key mechanics include exploring towns and the world map between battles to recruit new allies and find better gear, and managing each unit's unique weapons and spells. The pacing is deliberate, with battles that require careful positioning and resource management, but the difficulty is fair and never feels punishing. It feels like commanding a small, personal army where every decision matters.
