Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon is that rare remake that actually gets it right. It's still the same classic tactical RPG you remember—Runefaust scheming, Dark Dragon looming, turn-based battles with your ragtag team of knights, mages, and weirdly overpowered birdmen—but everything just feels smoother now. The pixel art got a glow-up, townsfolk actually have more to say, and your silent protagonist finally speaks (turns out they had opinions all along).

What surprised me was how much those little tweaks matter. Seeing the turn order during fights saves you from those "wait, WHY did the enemy archer go first?!" moments, and the pre-battle unit arranging stops you from accidentally leaving your healer in the back row again. There’s even this weird but fun card system where one character can transform into monsters you’ve collected—kinda gimmicky, but hey, free dragon mid-battle.

It’s still very much Shining Force though: wandering towns for hidden recruits, agonizing over whether to promote your units at level 10 or 20, and that one secret character nobody found without a guide. If you’ve played the original, the new story bits and speedrun bonuses give you a reason to come back. If you haven’t, this is the version to grab.
