Shining Force 3’s first scenario is one of those Saturn RPGs that just sticks with you. You start off leading a small band of fighters—knights, archers, mages—through grid-based battles where positioning actually matters. Miss a flank, and some poor spearman gets wrecked. But when you pull off a perfect pincer move? So satisfying.

The story’s got that classic fantasy-political drama mix, with betrayals and ancient relics popping up between fights. The sprites are chunky in that late-90s Saturn way, but the battle animations still have charm. And yeah, it’s in Japanese, but if you’ve played tactics games before, the menus aren’t too hard to figure out after a few skirmishes.

Honestly, it’s a shame this trilogy never got a proper English release—this first part alone could’ve been a cult hit. If you’ve got the patience for old-school SRPG pacing, it’s worth digging up.
