Play Silent Hunter Online
Command a U.S. submarine in Silent Hunter, patrol the Pacific, locate enemy ships, and sink them while managing your crew and evading detection.
I first played Silent Hunter back in 1996, when it came out for MS-DOS through the Classic Games label from Strategic Simulations, Inc. It was a time when simulation games were gaining depth, and this one stood out for its focus on submarine warfare. You didn't just command a sub; you lived inside it, managing everything from navigation to torpedo targeting with a level of detail that felt both demanding and immersive for its era.
In Silent Hunter, you control a U.S. submarine captain in the Pacific theater during World War II. Your main objective is to patrol assigned sectors, locate enemy ships, and sink them without being detected yourself. Key mechanics include manually plotting courses on a map, managing your boat's speed and depth to evade sonar, and carefully aiming torpedoes while accounting for target movement and water conditions. The pacing is slow and deliberate, with long stretches of quiet tension broken by sudden, frantic action. It feels like a high stakes chess match played in near total darkness, where one small mistake can mean a crushing depth charge attack or a silent, fatal plunge into the abyss.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
