Play Skate or Die Online

Skate or Die came out on the NES in 1988, published by Electronic Arts. It was part of that wave of games trying to capture the skateboarding and BMX culture that was everywhere in the late 80s. You didn't get a full simulation; it was more like a collection of extreme sports mini-games with a punk rock attitude and a lot of pixelated concrete.

You control a skater through five distinct events, each with its own rules. In Freestyle, you perform tricks in a half-pipe for points, while the Downhill race has you dodging cars and shoving other riders into obstacles. The strangest event is the Pool Joust, where you try to knock an opponent off their board with a jousting pole. The game moves fast and the controls demand precision, especially when building momentum for big air. It feels chaotic and a little unforgiving, but landing a perfect run is incredibly satisfying.
