Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood came out for the Nintendo DS in 2008, developed by BioWare. It was a strange but interesting time for handhelds, when developers were experimenting with established franchises in new genres. This one took Sonic and his friends and dropped them into a full turn-based RPG, which felt like a big departure from the usual high-speed platforming.

You control a party of Sonic characters, moving them screen by screen across the overworld map to explore locations and talk to other characters. The main goal is to track down the missing Chaos Emeralds and stop a new threat called the Marauders. Combat is turn-based, with timed touch-screen inputs to boost your attacks or defend against enemy moves. You also recruit various allies, manage their equipment, and use their special abilities to solve light environmental puzzles. The pacing is deliberate, more about strategy than reflexes, and some boss fights can be surprisingly tough if you're not prepared. It feels like a slower, more thoughtful version of Sonic's world, where you have to plan your moves instead of just holding right.
