Sonic Classics came out in 1995 for the Sega Genesis, a compilation put together by Sega that bundled Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, and Sonic Spinball into one cartridge. It was a straightforward collection for players who wanted easy access to these games without swapping carts, arriving at a time when the Genesis was still active but newer consoles were starting to take over.
You control Sonic, a blue hedgehog who runs and jumps through vibrant, side-scrolling stages filled with springs, loops, and enemy robots. The main goal is to reach the end of each act, defeat Dr. Robotnik, and rescue small animals trapped inside badniks. Signature mechanics include building momentum to run up walls and through elaborate loop-the-loops, as well as collecting rings for protection and extra lives. The pacing is relentlessly fast, though some zones demand careful platforming, and the difficulty can spike sharply in later stages. It feels like a rush of pure momentum, where one mistimed jump sends rings scattering everywhere.
