Sonic & Knuckles picks up right where Sonic 3 left off—you’re either speeding through zones as Sonic or climbing walls and gliding as Knuckles, finding paths you couldn’t reach before. Those casino bonus stages will clean you out of rings if you’re not careful.
Game Overview
If you thought Sonic 3 was good, Sonic & Knuckles cranks it up even more. You start off right where the last game ended—Sonic’s crash-landed in Mushroom Hill Zone after the Death Egg explosion, and Knuckles is still being a stubborn little guardian, convinced you’re the bad guy. This time, though, you can actually play as Knuckles, which changes everything. He can’t jump as high as Sonic, but gliding and climbing walls opens up shortcuts (and secret spots) you’d never reach otherwise.
The levels feel familiar but fresh—same speed, same rings, same shields from Sonic 3—but now there are these wild bonus stages. One’s a casino where you gamble rings on a slot machine (I lost way too many times), and another has you bouncing off orbs like some kind of pinball. And yeah, the Special Stages with the blue spheres are back, because apparently, collecting Chaos Emeralds wasn’t frustrating enough already.
The coolest thing? That weird slot on top of the cartridge. Plug in Sonic 3, and it becomes one massive game with save files (finally). Stick in Sonic 2, and suddenly Knuckles is wrecking Chemical Plant Zone like he owns the place. It’s one of those gimmicks that actually works. This game’s basically the peak of classic Sonic—fast, chaotic, and packed with secrets.
