Man, Soul Crystal takes me back—this was the kind of game you'd pop into your MS-DOS machine after school and completely lose track of time. The pixel art feels cozy in a way modern graphics don't, like flipping through an old fantasy book where every page hides some weird little secret. You start off picking between these scrappy character classes (I always went with the rogue, even though the mage's fireball animation was way cooler), and suddenly you're knee-deep in turn-based fights against floating eyeballs and skeleton knights.
What I love is how unapologetically old-school it is. No hand-holding, no quest markers—just you, a cryptic NPC hinting about a dungeon to the east, and the sheer panic of realizing you forgot to stock up on healing potions. The combat's simple but satisfying, especially when you finally get that one rare sword drop after grinding slimes for an hour. It's janky in places (good luck figuring out some of those inventory puzzles without a notebook), but that almost adds to the charm. If you miss the days when RPGs felt like exploring someone's wild notebook doodles, this one's worth dusting off.
Just don't blame me when you're still awake at 3 AM trying to beat the lava dungeon.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
