Play Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin (USA, Europe) Online

Swinging feels clunky at first, but once you get the rhythm, you’re thwipping between rooftops and dodging sewer traps before punching Kingpin’s goons into submission. The pixel art’s surprisingly sharp for how janky the controls are.

Game Overview

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin came out for the Sega Master System in 1991, developed by Technopop and published by Sega. It was one of the few comic book games on the system, and it tried to capture the feel of the comics with its side scrolling action and story driven levels. For its time, it offered a decent attempt at bringing Spider-Man's world to an 8 bit console.

You control Spider-Man through a series of levels, swinging between buildings, climbing walls, and fighting various enemies on your way to defeat the Kingpin. The game uses screen by screen exploration, with each area presenting different obstacles and enemies to overcome. You can shoot webs to attack or swing, and you need to navigate environmental hazards like electrified floors and bottomless pits. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially in later stages. It feels satisfying to master the web swinging and take down bosses, even with the occasional control frustrations.
