Star Command on the Amiga is one of those deep, slightly janky sci-fi RPGs that somehow makes you forget its rough edges once you start playing. You begin stranded at Startport Luna with barely any credits to your name, scrambling to assemble a ragtag crew before humanity gets wiped out. The character creation alone feels like its own minigame—you’re not just picking stats, you’re guiding each recruit through eight years of training, crossing your fingers they actually learn something useful instead of flunking out.

The galaxy is massive—32x32 sectors, each packed with planets and weird alien encounters. One minute you’re haggling with pirates (or pretending to be their god), the next you’re in turn-based ship combat where a single bad move leaves you drifting in space. The squad combat’s even better, especially when gravity and terrain start messing with your tactics. And yeah, your crew ages, dies, and can even be cloned if you scrounge up enough cash.

It’s got that Gold Box vibe but with spaceships, and somehow the janky UI just adds to the charm. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand—you’ll be flipping through the manual a lot.
