1988 Amiga tactical sci-fi RPG. Manage a starship crew across four classes. Turn-based space and ground combat in a 32x32 sector galaxy. 17 story missions with randomized side quests. Upgrade ships and recruit specialized crew members.
Star Command_Disk2 is one of those deep, crunchy Amiga RPGs where you spend half your time just getting your crew ready before you even leave the dock. You start at Starport Luna with a handful of credits and the weight of humanity’s survival on your shoulders—no pressure, right?
First, you’ve gotta recruit and train your team. Each character has stats like Strength and Intelligence, and you pick from four classes: Pilots, Marines, Soldiers, or Espers (the weird psychic ones). Training takes years—literally, eight in-game years—where you pick skills and hope they actually improve. Sometimes they just… don’t. Special Forces training might boost speed, or it might do nothing. It’s brutal, but weirdly satisfying when a character finally clicks.
Then comes the real money sink: buying a ship. There are nine types, each with different armor, fuel, and upgrade slots. Do you go cheap and risk getting blown up, or splurge and hope you can afford weapons later? And speaking of weapons, outfitting your crew is its own mini-game—armor, guns, gadgets, all with trade-offs. By the time you’re done, you’re broke but (hopefully) ready.
The galaxy is massive—32x32 sectors, each packed with planets and starports. You zoom from a galaxy-wide view down to individual planets, scanning for trouble or trade. Space combat is turn-based, with options to talk your way out (or pretend to be a god, which never gets old). Boarding enemy ships or exploring planets shifts to squad combat, where gravity and terrain actually matter. Missions range from scripted storylines to random jobs, so you can take your time or rush into the unknown.
It’s unforgiving, slow-paced, and sometimes frustrating—but if you like digging into the details of a sci-fi universe, it’s hard to put down. Just don’t get too attached to your crew.
