Star Fox Adventures came out for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002, developed by Rare. It was a strange and noticeable shift for the series, moving away from the arcade style space shooter action into a full blown adventure game. This was during a time when the GameCube was trying to carve out its own identity with a mix of familiar franchises and bold new ideas.

You control Fox McCloud, but you spend most of your time on foot exploring the planet Sauria. Your main goal is to reunite the planet's shattered pieces by collecting magical SpellStones and Krazoa Spirits. The gameplay revolves around screen by screen exploration, solving environmental puzzles with your staff, and combat that mixes staff whacks with a clunky targeting system. The pacing is slow and deliberate, focused more on item collection and talking to characters than on action. It feels like a competent, if somewhat awkward, attempt to blend the Star Fox universe with a classic adventure formula.
