Game Overview

Star Fox Assault came out for the GameCube in 2005, developed by Namco and published by Nintendo. It was part of that middle period for the console, a time when familiar franchises were trying out new ideas and sometimes getting a mixed reception. This one definitely continued the story from Star Fox 64, picking up after the defeat of Andross.

You control Fox McCloud and his team, piloting the Arwing through linear, screen-by-screen combat missions against the returning Aparoid threat. The main objective is to clear each area of enemies and often defeat a large boss. A signature mechanic is the ability to land your ship and continue the fight on foot or in other vehicles like the Landmaster tank, switching perspectives mid-mission. You collect weapon power-ups for your blaster and seek out hidden medals for completion. The pacing is generally fast, though the on-foot controls can feel a bit loose compared to the tight flying sections. It feels like a straightforward arcade shooter that isn't afraid to experiment, for better or worse.
