Star Fox Assault came out for the Nintendo GameCube in 2005, developed by Namco. It was part of that era where Nintendo's franchises were getting bigger, more cinematic sequels, and this one tried to push the series beyond its classic arcade shooter roots. You're back with Fox McCloud and the team, taking on a new biological threat called the Aparoids.

You control Fox directly, piloting the Arwing through open space combat, but also getting out to complete objectives on foot or in the Landmaster tank. The main goal is to repel the Aparoid invasion across various planets, which involves both intense dogfights and more tactical ground assaults. Signature mechanics include seamless transitions between vehicle and on-foot combat, using a versatile blaster with multiple fire modes, and coordinating with your wingmen during battles. The pacing shifts between frantic aerial sections and more deliberate ground missions, with a moderate difficulty that spikes during some boss encounters. It feels like a genuine expansion of the Star Fox formula, blending speed with strategy in a way that keeps you engaged.
