You start off slashing monsters in a medieval village, then suddenly you're blasting aliens with laser swords—this RPG doesn’t care about genre rules. Your party members actually hold grudges if you piss them off, so choose dialogue carefully.
Star Ocean on SNES starts like your typical medieval RPG—Ratix and his friends Dorn and Milly are just small-town warriors dealing with a mysterious plague. Then, bam, a spaceship crashes into their fantasy world, and suddenly you're juggling swords and sci-fi tech in the same party. The whiplash is kind of amazing.
Combat’s chaotic in the best way—you’re mashing buttons as Ratix while your AI teammates do their own thing, unless you tweak their tactics mid-fight. The approval system’s neat too: characters actually react if you make choices they hate, and it changes how they interact. (Milly once refused to heal me for a whole dungeon because I picked a fight with some bandits. Learned my lesson.)
It’s got that classic JRPG grind, but the mix of futuristic gear and old-school magic keeps things weirdly fresh. You’ll recruit a sniper who uses a laser rifle alongside your sword-wielding paladin, and somehow it works. The translation’s a bit rough, but the ambition still shines through.
