Star Ocean on the SNES is one of those games that makes you wonder how it even existed on a 16-bit console. You start off in a sci-fi spaceship, then suddenly you're teleported to a medieval fantasy planet—and somehow it all works. The real-time battles are chaotic in the best way, with your party dashing around slashing enemies while spells explode everywhere.
What really hooked me was the Private Actions system—you can wander towns and trigger little character moments that actually change relationships and story outcomes. And the crafting? Ridiculously deep for a 1996 game. I spent way too much time mixing random items just to see what absurd weapon I'd create next.
The DeJap fan translation is solid, though you'll still spot some charmingly awkward 2000s-era localization quirks. That spritework though? Still holds up, especially during the over-the-top special attacks. It's the kind of RPG that makes you wish Square had localized it back in the day instead of leaving it as a Japanese exclusive for years.
